Moles (Nevus) Removal

What is it?

Moles, also known as nevi, are dark spots that can appear anywhere on the body and can be raised or flat. Most people are presented with moles on their skin. These benign tumors can be excised either for cosmetic reasons or when they seem to be dysplastic due to the risk of transformation to malignant melanoma.

The procedure

Mole removal surgery is a straightforward outpatient procedure. If the mole is superficial, it may be shaved and cauterized with laser. If the mole merits a deep excision, stitches are used for closure.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia.

Recovery

When stitches are placed, they are removed after 7-10 days. They trauma must be kept dry for 2-3 days. In cases of mole shaving, a scab will form at the site of removal that will fall off in 1 week and a reddish area will be present for many weeks until it will blend with the surrounding skin. Regardless of the technique used for the mole removal, the area should be kept clean and protected from the sun with a high SPF. The final aesthetic result of the scar will be visible in 1 year.
