Hemangioma

What is it?

It is a common type of neoplasm (tumor) during infancy. They grow typically during the first months of age. Parents are worried about the cosmetic result; however, 50% of the hemangiomas regress until 5 years of age and 70% until 7 years. Vascular malformations, such as port-wine stains and arteriovenous malformations are distinct clinical entities, which are always present at birth and never regress.

The procedure

Surgical treatment is only indicated for hemangiomas which bleed and/or ulcerate. The majority of them are likely to regress on their own; so, no treatment is necessary. Hemangiomas in eyelids, nose and other special locations can be treated with propranolol, which accelerates their regression.
