Burn

What is it?

Burn is a type of injury to skin caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction or radiation. Following first-aid support and patient’s stabilization we have to evaluate its depth, because deep partial-thickness and full-thickness burns (previously stated as 3rd degree) need surgical treatment or else they lead to functional and aesthetic problems. Superficial burns are healed on their own following conservative treatment.

The procedure

Early surgical debridement (3rd day post-burn) is indicated for deep burns. The defect following debridement is mainly reconstructed with split-thickness skin grafts with or without dermal substitute (e.g. Integra). Old contracted scars, which cause functional deficits, are treated with excision and flap reconstruction (e.g. z-plasty).

Anesthesia

General anesthesia.
